Lower Sabao Lake Campground

See DeLorme Maine Atlas & Gazeteer page 35, section 1-E.

Lower Sabao Lake campground is located on a peninsula with towering pine trees. It offers a wonderful sand beach that is perfect for sunbathing and relaxing. Swimming is excellent here, particularly for small children. Kids can even fish for Pickerel right from the beach.

There are several beachfront sites, all within a one-minute walk to the beach. Tall pines provide shade and serenade you when the breeze blows through their branches. The sites are flat and dry, with a packed sand surface. This is a special, isolated place at the end of the road with no through traffic. If you want to hear noise, you will have to make your own! We just ask that you don't make much.

You can explore the entire lake with your canoe or kayak, and there is a boat launch for larger boats. The West Branch of the Machias River flows out of the lake at the end of the peninsula, running through an expansive meadow, offering opportunities to explore, fish, and perhaps spot a moose, great blue heron, or a beaver.

We have at least five different loons on the lake this summer, some campers saw a cow moose with triplets this spring. Eagles fly over daily, and deer are often seen. Sabao Lake offers spectacular early morning sunrises, and colorful sunsets. Peace and quiet abound at Sabao Lake.
